Forgive me for starting new thread but without looking for hours thought this would be faster . I would like to rewire my truck but keep it with the old style wiring is this possible or not? If so does anyone know where I can get a new harness. The covering on the original wiring is cracked in many places. If you get Vintage Truck Magazine it is in the Sept/Oct issue that just came out. I used these guys for my 1946 GMC. The harness was perfectly done. They will add fog light and electric fuel pump wires for free, I believe. http://www.narragansettreproductions.com/
Thanks to all that sent information to help me. Now given that I have never rewired any vehicle comes the hard part do I do it myself or look for someone far more qualified than myself lol. Phil
A '40 is fairly simple but it depends on your experience with electrics. If you're not comfortable with it pay someone, it's money well spent. I bought from YNZ (price comparison found them to be slightly less expensive) when I rewired my '38 and was/am pleased with the quality of product. I don't know how much was hype but YNZ told me the resellers (Chevs of the 40s/The Filling Station, etc.), that don't specialize in wiring, buy the harnesses they sell from them for resale. Be advised that the modern cloth covered wire is PVC coated wire with a cloth veneer over the PVC so the overall size will be a bit larger. That proved to be a bit of an issue when running multiple wires through firewall grommets sized for the original wire. If you also replace the grommets with new, more pliable grommets it won't be as much of an issue. Good luck with your project.

I purchase the correct wire gauge and color tracer and did my own. One section at a time. I used black woven loom and heat shrink at the terminal connectors. I have about $95 in it. I picked up a wiring diagram with the correct gauge on it and another diagram that was plastic coated with the correct colors of the wires. For my year the color was tan so I substituted yellow with the correct tracer color.
All the sets I found didn’t use the old fuse box which was a must for me. The only section I didn’t replace was under the dash. Nothing wrong with that section. Very easy to pull one section off and make up the new one to the same length put it in the loom and install. Later I bought the woven split loom and combined the sets somewhat like they were originally.
I’ve never done this before and everything turned out great.

Can’t begin to tell you how much I hate the name Stovebolt.

Hi Don,
Where did you find the wiring diagram? I've got a '46 3/4 ton so it should be the same diagram.
Thank you Bolt for the quick reply. Do you know if there is supposed to be a fuse block or terminal block attached to the firewall? I'm not seeing one in any of the diagram, Here's what's under the hood in the '46.
Well, I was going to attach a photo of the block but apparently it's too big :-( Now there's something you don't hear very often :-)
Just spoke to the folks at YNZ. They build the cloth wrapped harnesses. According to them this must have been some kind of aftermarket thing that the PO attached to the firewall. There was just the one fuse for the lighting in the original.
