The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline ball collar support question

My truck is a 1953 Chev half ton panel. It has a SM420 with the original torque tube propeller shaft. There is a bracket that attaches to the rear transmission support via the ball collar. Between this bracket and the transmission support is a rubber pad. My question is, how thick is this rubber pad supposed to be?

If you have an original it should have the rubber bonded to both metal pieces. My best recollection is that was about 1/2". Someone can correct me. Most of the aftermarket ones use about a 1/4" rubber piece that just bolts between the two pieces. Back when I restored my truck someone was still offering the bonded version.

Thanks, Chuck. My rubber is not bonded to the metal. It has two thin rubber pieces, each about 3/16" thick wedged in there with two bolts going through. It has a slight gap but I can't get a third rubber spacer in there. So your recollection is pretty accurate. I'm just snugging it up and not going to worry about it.

Catalog gives length & width of mount, might be able to find a mount by using part number to find thickness of pad.
Note: 40-47 mounts are almost the same size, there for I believe the pads for all years mentioned are the same size.

Looking at the assembled mounts from both vendors shows the pads in different configurations.
Stacked or split. Hmm whats stock?

Call them and ask how thick they are and report back.
