the rocker piece should have a gap, there's a break there, it doesn't get welded to the back cab rocker molding ... but not an inch - if the step itself is an inch short of the door opening, I'd guess yer opening is messed up - how does the door fit?
AFAIK that combo piece is only made by one supplier, and ones I've seen and used fit fine, like mkabwe's appears to
