So my 54 3100 PU is in many pieces and the paint just about ready to be applied. Wanted to get ahead of things
before all the painted parts come back to be assembled to make a truck. One task was to change out a wrong size water pump
from 5/8 to 3/8 pulley.

So my question is, is the fan pulling air through the radiator (I assume so) and if you are facing the fan from the front, is it rotating clockwise
as you face towards the engine?

hi,
i do believe that the fan is turning clock wise when looking at it from the front of the engine.
here is my reasoning,
the fan turns the same direction as the engine
when i use the crank to start the engine one must turn that crank clockwise, aka push down on driver side, or the preferred method, heave up on the passenger side.
you can't turn the engine backwards with the crank as it is locks into the front pulley one way only.
make sense? i think i make sense most days... but i could be poor at explaining stuff sometimes.

If you're concerned about getting the fan on backward it can't happen. You can turn a radial style fan blade around and the blade pitch is still in the same direction. A lot of people don't believe that until they actually try it. I've not tried to mount one backward but there would likely be clearance & mounting issues if you tried it anyway.

The only reverse-rotation fan and water pump setups I'm aware of are on some serpentine belt systems where the fan and water pump turn opposite crankshaft rotation. All the fans on stovebolts turn clockwise when viewed from the front. Now- - - -trick question- - - -how do you explain the concept of "clockwise" to a kid whose only experience with telling time is by looking at a digital readout on his/her smart phone?

forget about clockwise, try to explain quarter to or quarter after! When I was teaching Chemistry I got tired of kids always watching the clock to see if the class was almost over. So I put up a clock that ran backwards! Eventually they figured out how to tell time with it, but one kid told me "now I can't read the clock at home".

That's known as a "bartender's clock". It's designed to hang behind a bar and be read in the mirror.

I spend some of my time at work teaching the younger generation how to locate targets at night with night vision equipment from the bed of a pickup truck. Since the shooter cannot see the targets, the spotter must relay the relative position of the targets. 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, etc.
Problem is, they had no concept of analog clock faces! I was flabbergasted! Then I had to take the time to explain to them what flabbergasted meant.

BTW, I am on topic. There is the phrase "pickup truck" in my post.

Dad learned aerial gunnery in 1944 from the back of a moving pickup truck- - - - -shooting skeet targets with a 12 gauge pump shotgun mounted on an M-2 machine gun carriage!
