From what I understand, 1950 was the last year for the old style drum brakes, I think they are called Huck brakes, and I am guessing they are not self energizing.

Is that all correct?

Secondly is it possible to fit backing plates and brakes from a later year truck and retain the original 6 lug wheels, and original spindles / axels?

Yes , I fitted Bendix from a '54 truck , to my '40 . There was some minor adjustments to make , one I can remember was the 2 bottom bolts on the steering arm were larger diameter , maybe from 7/16" to 1/2" .
I'm sure someone else will fill in the gaps , I did this 20yrs ago and no longer remember it all .

Will this work for the rear brakes as well?

To upgrade to Bendix brakes you'll need to swap the entire brake assembly- - - -backing plates, shoes, drums, probably front hubs, etc. If you can figure out a way to make the backing plates fit the rear axle housing and the axle flange is the right diameter to center the drums, I don't see a reason the whole system couldn't be adapted. Be sure to factor in any differences in the bore and stroke of the master cylinders- - - -that might need to be changed as well.
