Replacing the seals on the transmission end of the drive line. Does the end assembly slide forward and off ? I looked in the 54 Truck Manual but I could not find the procedure.

My old seal is made of rubber, new ones are cork. Will the old cork style ok to use or should I get the rubber type ?

54 1/2 ton with Hydra-Matic transmission

Thanks. Michael...

Michael,

I might not understand your questions.

In order to install new u-joint bell/ball seals, you have to disconnect the u-joint assembly and slide the yokes apart.

Here is the parts kit (you should use all new seals/gaskets):
https://www.classicparts.com/1935-54-U-Joint-Ball-Gasket-Seals/productinfo/92-111/

Here is the gasket adjustment procedure (UNIVERSAL BALL JOINT ADJUSTMENT) in the Shop Manual.

I think my seals have been cork.

Tim, to replace the seals I need to Remove the universal joint ball from the torque tube.

In the UNIVERSAL BALL JOINT ADJUSTMENT in the Shop Manual, " Remove the universal joint ball from the torque tube ". It does not say how. Does it just slide forward and off ?

The yoke came out ok and is in good shape.
