What's the deal with the black fenders on a green (or other color) truck? You see it all the time, but I've never come across one in original unrestored condition. Were they a factory option or just a trend started later on?

Absolutely, my salesman order book(s) 1949 and 1950 clearly state that the zone offices can accommodate the requests. You will also notice it is referred to as an option not an accessory. Options denote factory, accessories are a dealer applied part or upgrade.

With no codes on the plates you could paint your AD any color and make a case for it (within reason for that time period).
A little later version but this GMC salesman chip book lists over 200 colors not shown in the data book.

What they advertised in 1942, fleets were big business for GM.

Thanks for all of the pics Brad. Love that '42 Commercial Open Delivery model. Don't think I've ever seen one.

Interesting that State of Washington required a second tail light on the one ton but not on the 3/4 ton

In addition to 2 tone fenders.... they also offered 2 tone cabs. This option offered a different exterior color from the belt line up.

The two-tone cab option became a Regular Production Option on trucks in 1954.
Four different lower colors and an upper color of white/cream (and, 4 different "matching" two-tone interiors).

Looks like it was available earlier than that Tim.

Here is a picture of an earlier 47-53 cab on the GM assembly line.... clearly it is sporting 2 tones.

Fleet buyers could have trucks painted to match their fleet, but those combinations were not always available to the general public. I know at least as far back as the 30's Coca-Cola could buy trucks with Red chassis...big money talks!

As far as the eye can see....

Finished 2 tone 1947-1950 panel vans ready for delivery outside the GM plant.

My 55-1st 3600 was two-tone - white top over blue.

simplex, the special-order-paint color/combination/locations 47-55st trucks also came off (went through) an assembly line.

Also, many "fleet" buyers had special-order company-color paint jobs.
After the those cabs were painted, the cabs travelled the assembly line.

The factory RPO-coded by color, two-color A-D Chevrolet trucks started in 1954.

Understood Tim. The 54-55-first 2 tone options are well documented...... { not so much for the 47-53 trucks }.

Just because it was not officially listed on a RPO sheet does not mean that it never happened though.
