I finally found what I needed to repair my transmission after wrecking my over drive on the way to the home coming .
while waiting for parts i replaced the original t 5 with another from a s 10 with a 3.76 1 st gear and a .86 o/d.
I could live with the .86 o/d but the 3.76 1 st was way to low ,almost a bull gear and the 2.18 2 nd. gear left the smell of asbestos in the air when using it as a first gear.
Well I found a Camaro v/8 unit with the needed .72 o/d , replaced the top and tailhousing with s 10 parts . This seems to work well with the 3.90 rear end but the real test will happen this week end as I plan to travel to the Syracruse ny. nationals this weekend.
Originally the same transmission was mated to a 4.57 rear end , but I thought it reved to high at highway speeds.
I'll let you know how things work out when I get home sunday night.

John

For anyone who is not familiar with panel fan, he is Batman (or maybe Dudley Do-right. He is Canadian after all).
He showed up at Homecoming and made it almost all the way there from Canada before his 5th gear crumbled like burnt Canadian bacon. He boldly removed the T-5, took it all apart, found the totally destroyed 5th gear, put it back together, then decided to drive it back to Canada in 4th gear.
He then decided that his 4.10 (I think) rear end would scream in 4th gear, so he then proceeded to swap the too steep rear end for the 3.90 rear end which he just happened to have brought with him. All of this over a 3 day weekend! He made it all the way back to Canada no problem.
He never once scowled, nor cursed, nor even harrumphed.
THAT is what Batman would do!

I recall the situation described as the best breakdown he's ever had!

Bat Cave was too far away. Had to settle for the Bat Mobile.

Kinda funny that I’m reading this TODAY, because just today I ran across a pile of papers and top one had his name and address in case I came across a new gear set for him. Glad to hear he found the needed parts.
Yes, he has the right attitude (or should I say “BAT-titude”?). Good skill set too.

While reading the above comments I found my eye sight deteriorating on only to realize my head was swelling and warped my glasses.
I can,t let my wife read them as over the years she come to believe some how that repairing cars and motorcycles on the side of the road and various other locations was common place and not a disaster but an adventure . Our traveling days are not over yet and it would not be right to disillusion her now.
That being said my trip to Syracuse n.y for the national event, a round trip of about 500 miles went well and problem free. The rear end I installed at the homecoming had been uninspected and now with about 2000 miles on it its starting to whine quite loudly. I will replace it with the 4.57 one that was in the truck previously for the time being as I have grown fond of the 3.90 ratio and would hate to destroy it. When I get it out I will record the part no.and post it
I will keep you posted of any other (ADVENTURES )
