Before I struggle, I'm trying to figure out if I can pull the engine without the trans, or do I have to pull it as one unit? There's a lot of grime to clean off, so I can't tell if all the bolts are accessible or not, but I thought I remembered hearing that it had to come as a unit. On my '47.1 series GMC there were a few bolts that were difficult to reassemble by myself, which I replaced with studs for ease of one person reassembly.

'37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

Can the engine be removed without removing the transmission? Or, I suppose, can the trans be removed without removing the engine? To clarify, I know myself and there is work to be done on my fenders and grill, if I remove them there is a 99% chance that I'll have to fix them before I remount them. I just want the truck back on the road, I was really hoping to avoid opening pandoras box.

I would caution against pulling any more sheet metal than necessary. You will probably break a few bolts and that can be a pain to deal with. Getting one of these is a life saver for pulling engines. https://mossmotors.com/tilt-lift-engine-hoistI have had one for years and won't pull an engine without one. My truck is a Low Cab Forward and the front floor support would not allow the combination to come out in one pull.
