I have the cab on my 46 down to bare metal and was wondering what the product is that you see them use when putting a real smooth finish on the body. The roof and the back of my cab are full of pin holes and obviously can't prime and paint over this and expect a smooth finish as I will be applying a top clear coat. One body shop person I talked to said theres a 2 part putty on the market that spreads like cream and then you sand it down just about to the metal. Can anyone elabarate on this. Thanks Bob T

if the metal is indeed full of "pinholes" the product you want is a welder .... if there's minor pitting that can't be leveled with normal sanding, there are a variety of fillers [genericly called body putty or 'bondo'] and spot puttys available, check local auto parts places that have body shop supplies

red58 is right, bondo won't cure yer pinholes..either a wire feed welder or a torch with either brass or steel rod..I've found that brass vis the easiest fer pinholes...

If you're dealing with pits rather than pin holes, there's a product at O'Reilly's called Putty Kote that works well. It's smoother and easier to sand than Bondo.

Theres also a product called "frosting" thats real good for filling minor scratches,pinholes,etc....
It goes on smooth and sands real easy.

Thanks very much for the info. I think I'm going to go with the putty as it's not just pinholes but the whole surface is pitted and rough. To lead or weld a complete surface would be a little tedious and might cause warpage of the sheet metal. I believe Boyd Coddingtons body crew apply it to the whole surface of his vehicles and they sand down to the surface to give it a nice smooth finish prior to primer and paint. thanks again for the info. A skim coat of filler would take care of it. And it will take care of any uneven body panels too.

Make sure you get all of the rust out of the holes first. The filler won't stay in if there's rust present, plus, it'll rust further inder the filler. I'll also second the Putty Coat filler. Good stuff. it's made by the same people who make Bondo, RPM/Dynatron, but is a more professional product. Well worth the extra cost, which isn't really that much.

there are finish fillers for the top coat that makes it very easy for a smooth finish sence you have holes i would use a filler that has fiberglass first then follow up with a finish top coat just like frosting a cakes when sanding if you brake into the fiberglass filler stop youve gone to far put another top coat on practace makes perfect you want to keep the metal completly sealed

If its pitting from surface rust, use a body filler like Rage or a putty/frosting , but I can think of any names.
