I commented on a previous article about a 1957 International panel, outfitted for civil defense.It had under the hood an alternator, with a large selenium rectifier bridge. I was not aware that alternators were installed in trucks at such an early date so this was a really interesting piece of history for me. I have since read that the military had alternators earlier than the civilian car industry did so I am wondering if anyone has seen a pre-sixties Stovebolt with one of these early alternator setups. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy truckernix, I have a 1959 GMC ex firetruck with a huge alternator on it, large heatsink mounted to the inner fender, has three at least 8 gauge wires going to the heatsink from the alternator. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,798 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,798 | Not a stovebolt, or even a GM product (Horrors!) but I knew a man who owned a retired 57 Ford police car with a huge Leece-Neville alternator with a selenium-stack rectifier about 6 inches square. I believe it was a 75, or possibly a 100 amp model.

Some of the common car makes didn't get alternators until 1964. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,798 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,798 | Delco made a commercial vehicle alternator back in the 1950's that looked like an oversized generator, not the classic short, large-diameter shape we're accustomed to seeing. I had a couple of them at my school shop, along with the regulators they needed. I don't know what the original application might have been, but it didn't look to be military.
