A friend of mine just brought home a gorgeous 1953 GMC half ton 5 window. But it's not correct in many ways. The engine casting number says 5845383. I can't find that number anywhere, it is a six cylinder, looks like a 235.

Thanks Tim, the number looks more like a 6 than an 8 but I'm thinking it must be an 8. Did those engines have the 3 threaded holes on each side, thinking for motor mounts? Were those holes there before the Chevy V8?

I am not sure when the side motor mounts started being used on Chevrolet/GMC engines.

Chevy's are about 3" shorter than GMC's so if the fan is way short of the radiator, Chevy, if about .75" short of the radiator-GMC. GMC's SN, r side, stamped on pad by starter, start with displacement, I. e. 228xxxxx, etc.

'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
