The speedo on my 56 3100 doesn't work.If I disconnect the cable from the gearbox and attach the cable to a battery drill and spin the cable, the speedo will move up the scale.I think the bit that goes in the gearbox is no good, but I don't know what is called or what type I require.Any info please on how to check what I need.Cheers

Ironically enough, it's called a speedometer gear.
Don't know what transmission you have, but here's is one on ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-56-1957-58-60-CHEVY-SPEEDOMETER-GEAR-in-Transmission-21Teeth-Red-With-SEAL/131645584848?fits=Year%3A1956%7CMake%3AChevrolet&hash=item1ea6b035d0:g:sTAAAOSwl9BWL3qg

They are color coded based on the number of teeth you need.
Good luck!
