It has to come out and then the handle slides off (that's how it is SUPPOSED to work anyway).

It drives all the way through. And then with your last tap, it falls out and you can't find it. It's a standard design roll pin, any hardware store will have them....so get several. Get it almost all the way out and grab it with needlenose pliers and pull. (Some folks call them a Tension Pin).

The pin will have to be tapped in, gently, with a hammer. May have to hold the pin with a set of needlenose to line it up and get it started. The pin does fit in the handle tight. It will take several taps cause it only drives in a shade per tap. In other words, it ain't gonna drive all the way in with one tap. Patience.
