When I started rebuilding my 1946 1/2T truck, it had came with a rusted out 216 engine and a Carter YF manual choke carb. An acquaintance provided me with a 1955 235 engine. It came with a Rochester series B carb, automatic choke. I would much rather have the manual choke. Is it possible to use the Carter YF on my '55 235? The hole spacing on the bottom section (carb to manifold mount) doesn't quite match, so I would presumably need some sort of adapter.

The extra displacement of the 235 will make the Carter run a little rich, due to more volume going through the carb at any particular RPM. It would be simpler to run the 216 intake manifold on the 235 with a set of stepped-up alignment rings than try to adapt the Carter to the wide-spaced 235 mounting flange.

first of all, I don't have the 216 manifolds any more. And I am not sure what "stepped-up alignment rings" are.

There are YF carbs designed for the 235 that would have the correct base size. Check eBay

I believe model 2100s would fit your engine.

Stepped up alignment rings allow the use of a 216 intake, which uses a smaller intake alignment ring then the 235, fit a 235 chevy head which has a larger intake ring and vice versa. They are nice to have when you want to install an intake that was made for a 216 on a 235 or in this case. That being said, I am pretty sure there are later YF's or YFA's with the larger bolt pattern although I don't know whether the larger YFs came with manual choke.
