I have an all stock 1955 Second Series 3600. I haven't had the original battery hold down on the battery for....quite awhile. Long story, but I had misplaced the stock one. I found it and painted it and am ready to install it. However, I worry (I worry a lot) that the battery clamps will wear through the paint on it and cause a short or sparks.....or worse. Surely this wasn't the case when new. How did they keep it from happening?

What size battery are you using?

My guess is that the battery clamps should be clear of the cover (as in earlier years (box in different location)?

Wait to hear from someone with your style battery box. Those felt-ring insulators might be sufficient?

Your response makes me wonder something. I'm using as close to the same size batter as I can find. I believe the cover will fit just fine, but.....is it possible that the 1955 battery had the posts placed closer to the center of the battery? I wish I could afford the original tar top style battery. frown

Why not just turn the clamp 90 degrees so the cable insulation is over the hold down? It won't matter if the ground clamp touches anything. If the cable is too short to do that, use a longer cable.

Ahh...perhaps I have been overthinking it. I'll try that tonight. Thanks.

Got it! The cable clamps clear more than I thought they would. It's all good. Thanks!
