I haven't had the original battery hold down on the battery for....quite awhile. Long story, but I had misplaced the stock one. I found it and painted it and am ready to install it. However, I worry (I worry a lot) that the battery clamps will wear through the paint on it and cause a short or sparks.....or worse. Surely this wasn't the case when new. How did they keep it from happening? | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | What size battery are you using?
My guess is that the battery clamps should be clear of the cover (as in earlier years (box in different location)?
Wait to hear from someone with your style battery box. Those felt-ring insulators might be sufficient? | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 39 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 39 | Your response makes me wonder something. I'm using as close to the same size batter as I can find. I believe the cover will fit just fine, but.....is it possible that the 1955 battery had the posts placed closer to the center of the battery? I wish I could afford the original tar top style battery. | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 | Why not just turn the clamp 90 degrees so the cable insulation is over the hold down? It won't matter if the ground clamp touches anything. If the cable is too short to do that, use a longer cable. Jerry

Thanks. | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 39 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 39 | Got it! The cable clamps clear more than I thought they would. It's all good. Thanks! | | |
