Is there any trick to separating the old outer cowl panel from the upper panel by the windshield and the firewall itself? Finding the various spot welds is proving almost impossible as they are invisible. Down the door front hinge panel was easy as they were visible.
I know the cowl panel slips up and behind the upper panel but it also appears I need to coax the upper panel into bending out a little to allow the new panel in.

I believe the upper cowl to lower cowl panel joint is recessed and leaded, so you need to melt the lead out to find the spot welds. I think I would modify the patch panel to fit instead of bending the original upper cowl.
That's the case if you got the full lower cowl panel patch. If you got the lower half of the lower cowl panel (doesn't go up to the hood), then just cut the original out and butt weld the new one to the remaining metal.
