I did a search for Auxiliary Brake Fluid Reservoir but I was unable to find out anything. What is this called? See attached photo.

Good grief- - - -a hundred bucks for something that can be made with a piece of copper tubing soldered into the bottom of a brake fluid can?

I guess I didn’t ask the question properly. I hope to reuse this one. I just wanted to know what it was called in case I could not and needed to find one. I was searching this forum as it is on my 40 Chevy truck. It’s nothing no more than a reservoir.

Would this have been a GM part or an add on from Railway Express Agency?

Harmon, anytime you post asking questions PLEASE post year and model of your truck, ie; 1954 4100 235ci. We’re good but not that good. I see you said it’s a ‘40 but what size? So, help us help you. 🛠

I didn’t mean to confuse. It is a 1940 1 1/2 Ton Chevrolet with a Ward box body. The brake reservoir is mounted on the firewall and runs down to the master cylinder. The engine is s 216 with a four speed and closed driveline. I imagine this reservoir assisted in extra braking power back in the day. I hope to reuse as much as possible of the parts where I can of a very rough but unusual truck.

I posted photos of the truck on big bolts and Jerry has been a huge resource of information on the engine and transmission.

Does anyone have this reservoir on their trucks?

The reservoir has nothing to do with the power of the brakes, it only supplies sufficient fluid. Additional power can be supplied, if wanted, by the addition of a hydrovac(vacuum) booster; or revised pedal geometry.

With the custom body, the conventional method of filling the master cylinder was probably difficult or impossible to do. The remote reservoir did nothing to improve the performance of the brakes- - - - it just made topping off the fluid more convenient.

I would like to add one to mine just to ease the checking and filling procedure, and to eliminate the original "open to atmosphere" cap vent arrangement (the hole in the cap).

Thank you for the information. That makes sense. The area under floor is rotted so I don’t see the typical access plug.

That is an interesting component for the reservoir. I wish other models used something similar as checking brake fluid levels is rather a pain in the neck. Would you mind taking a picture of the master cylinder fill plug where this reservoir line attaches?

I would be glad to. I am outside of Atlanta and the truck is on our farm in SC. I have some pressure washing to do on the truck. It will be a few weeks but will take a few photos to see where this one attaches.

I am helping restore a Railway express truck that has a remote fluid reservoir like that. I haven't put it back on yet but have it all cleaned up & painted. Like they said its there for a convienant way to service the MC. This one is a early 50,s Ford.

This one is rough. I have an entire driveline and engine now. I need three more wheels. I am collecting along for now. For now being under cover and cleaned out is a huge start. Best to you on the restoration.
