I have a 1949 216 3600.

Where is the vin number located on this truck?

The serial number, which may or may not be the VIN, it depends on how your state titles is here. Located about 5" above the lower DS hinge opening. For a 1949 this number will appear nowhere else on the vehicle, the frame is not stamped.

The second photo also clearly shows the unique clutch head attachment screws for this plate. The plate as shown is exactly what you should find for your truck. Some states title to the engine number, other states like Utah titled to both back in the day.

To build on Brad's answer. Most states used the engine number through '55. A few used the unit serial number which would be on the data plate in Brad's second pic and I just learned from Brad that Utah used both. Over the years many vehicles have had the original engine replaced without re-titling the vehicle. Obviously this creates issues when selling the vehicle and transferring the title. If yours is titled using the engine number, that number will be on a raised boss just behind the distributor.

VSN = Vehicle Serial Number
VIN = Vehicle Identification Number
ESN = Engine Serial Number

They called it VSN back in the day then started calling it VIN later, can't tell you when the change happened.

Great info guys.

My number on the title is supposed to match the door data plate but it’s one number off. Has been that way for many many years. I’m correcting the data plate to match the title to make it easy. It took 9 months for Minnesota dmv to get the sellers name on the title. After all that searching and clearing the title. Nothing prompted them to check the truck. I didn’t know the number was off until I went in to get my plates.

Glad to know there is nothing stamped on the frame so I cant get myself in trouble. The number on the motor block isn’t even close.

Note: You CAN get yourself in trouble for altering the attached identification plate. In most if not all States it is a Felony. Altering can only be done at the direction and under the direct supervision of your States DMV. Since this subject has been the topic of many posts since the beginning of this site nothing further is needed.
