Hi all. I have decided to tackle the project of swapping out the old original vacuum wiper motor with a 12v electric wiper motor while I'm tackling this wiring project. I ordered a wiper motor (part number CX1366) from Classic Industries that has the original knob. However, after doing research and reading posts on here, it appears that it will not work with the choke cable in the stock position. Has anyone else been able to use this motor with the choke cable in the stock position? Is there another option with leaving the original choke cable in the stock position? This is on a 1949 Chevy 3100.

It looks like Jim Carter's website shows one that is modified for keeping the stock choke cable (part number WW149C). Anyone used this one? Does Jim Carter sell the stock looking wiper switch knob? I couldn't find it on his website.

Thanks,
Darrell

I installed that same wiper kit, and was not impressed with it. It does work, but it didn't have the stroke on the wiper arms that I thought it should have.
The connection from the motor shaft to the arms would not stay tight enough even though I tightened it with pliers on the end of the allen wrench.
accidentally had my hand in the way of the wiper arm, and when it hit my hand it slipped on the shaft and the wipers stopped. Had to crawl back under the dash and redo it.
I didn't however have to move the choke on mine, but it took a little rerouting of the cable (and a few swear words on both projects) to make it work.
The stock looking wiper switch was plastic on my kit, and looked like it.

Well, I'm about ready to give up. I ordered the wiper motor from Classic Industries and it wouldn't clear the stock choke cable. So, I sent it back. I ordered a wiper motor from Brothers trucks. Talked to the sales rep before I ordered it to make sure the one I was ordering would clear the stock choke cable. Guess what. It doesn't. Bent the choke cable all to crap trying to get the thing installed. Still don't have it in. I am at my wits end with this thing. Looks like I'm going to have a big [censored] yard ornament sitting in front of my shop.

Somebody hurry up and help Darrell out!
I will stand by, lurking to glean the good info so I can make the same swap on my 49.

Go to a junkyard, buy a mid 90's s-10 blazer REAR window wiper motor. It swings back and forth like the original vacuum wiper. Cost would be about $20-$30. Or go to Napa or where ever, would be higher but you could return it if you don't like the way it fits. You will have to make a bracket from some scrap metal to hang it where it needs to be for clearance. Its a smaller footprint than the aftermarket motors. And you will need to make or use the arm attach from the vacuum motor. The motor has a slightly shorter stroke than the vacuum one, so you can lengthen the wiper attach rod a little, or live with it. The arm attachment to the motor is different, but you can fix that with a reamer and files. All of this is just make it work stuff, not rocket science. You gain intermittent wipers also. It does work. If you need a video, I can direct you to one that a guy did. Just PM me. But it is pretty simple to do, just don't throw any parts away until your done. Or you can change your choke location for that $200 + wiper kit.
Pull your choke cable out of the dash to install, then reinstall the cable when done.

Easy now! I ordered from Classic parts of America American made 12 volt wiper motor #67-064C
It’s made by Newport Enginering and is strong and sweeps like the old janitor back in elementary school. Clears the stock choke cable no problem. A good friend with a daily driver has ran the same unit for 20k miles no issues.

1951 3100

And I can add the same as TrknGMC. Mine came from Classic Parts (same folks?), and it did fit real close to the choke cable, but I did not have to re-engineer anything.....this time.

Those all appear to be the same motor if you look at them, Why are you having so difficult of a time making the cable fit? As per my first post, I installed that kit in my 53 and only had to deflect the choke cable a little when I put it back in. I did have the spedo removed for access when I did it. If you go to my 53 3100 link below you can see a picture of my choke cable going by the wiper motor. (edit) I'm still not impressed with this kit, you would expect for 5x times the money of doing it yourself it would be a lot better. Even if it does last at least 22K miles.

Same issue as LeeP. Works okay but arm slips on shaft. I finally removed it and drilled a hole through the collar and shaft and put a pin in it to keep it in place. Short stroke and noisy. I have a 54 3100 and did not have any issue with the choke cable.

I'm going to try it again with the speedo removed and possibly taking the choke cable out until I get it put in. Then maybe I can get the choke cable back in and routed around the motor like in your picture.

I finally got the wiper motor installed. All went ok after I took the choke cable out and got it out of the way. I'm going to have to buy a new choke cable, though. I damaged the old one trying to put the wiper motor in. The motor and the wipers work great. Now on to the rest of the wiring.
