I'm sure you could do either, but traction is probably an issue in any case. You might need chains and a good amount of weight in the bed.
My 1 ton spins or gets stuck real easy in snow, and wet grass just the same, normal tires.

'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | It's not real easy to make an AD 1 ton into 4x4, they are so narrow most driven front axles with 8 lugs are newer and therefore wider, and the ones that are narrow enough, like from perhaps a jeep are not really strong enough.
There were aftermarket 4x4 conversions back then, Coleman I've seen one of, and a couple NAPCO. I have 2 sets.
