Louder and you don’t want to hold the button very long at each honk.

Agreed... a 6V horn on 12V is loud enough to scare the bejezzus out of a railroad conductor.

To take the load off the horn wiring going up the steering column, it's a good idea to install a relay to carry the current to the horn. If you want to install a 1 ohm 200 watt resistor inline with the relay, it will moderate the volume a little.

I rewired my horns when I went to 12-volt 10 years ago. I put them in series instead of the original parallel. Of course, I had to insulate the first horn in the circuit using nylon bolts and several pieces of plastic milk bottle between the mounting plate and the firewall.

It seems the 2nd horn might get an oscillating current from the 1st but it seems to work.

The horns on my truck were barely adequate. I had tried to adjust them for best operation. When I changed over to 12 volts last season the horns sounded just right. Of course I changed the relay over to a 12 volt relay.

The horns on my 38 Master are deafening just running on 6 volts. I think I would put them in series for 12 volts.

6v horn relay

A 6v horn relay was used with the standard horn from 53-55st.
A 6v horn relay was used with the optional/accessory dual horns (47-55st).

Try this resistor

https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Electric-12-Volt-to-6-Volt-Reducer-for-Motors,15824.html?sku=91064103&utm_medium=CSEGoogle&utm_source=CSE&utm_campaign=CSEGOOGLE&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0YfZiaq12QIVkVp-Ch3YIQTgEAQYAiABEgIZS_D_BwE

It's what is commonly used on 6-12v blower motors.

A good place to mount it would be next to the horn for heat dissipation.

Here is a Stovebolt.com Tech Tip on 6v to 12v conversion.

Yes, you should change all light bulbs to 12v.
