Hello. I just purchased a 1949 five window 3100 back in December. I haven't tinkered with it much because it has been so cold. The other night I thought I would get it out and drive it down the road and check it out. About 2 miles down the road it started losing power on me. It finally got to the point that I had to pull off the road into a parking lot. I had a friend come and we towed it home. We thought it might be the points, so I looked and sure enough, the points were shot. So, I did a complete tune up. I put new plugs, plug wires, points, condenser, rotor and distributor cap on. I set the timing on the truck to top dead center. The truck has a 1954 Chevy Belair engine in it.
When I try to start the truck, it will not start unless the choke is all the way out. It will run five seconds and then shuts down. I can't tell if it's losing fire or losing fuel. I thought the fuel filter might be stopped up, so I put a new fuel filter on it. No change. The fuel gauge doesn't work, so I thought it might be low on fuel, so I put about eight gallons in it and that topped it off. No change. I thought I would see if it was pumping fuel to the carb, so I took the hose off at the carburetor side of the fuel filter and when the engine turns over, it is pumping a good volume of fuel. For the life of me, I can't figure out what is going on with it. It will start right up with full choke, run five seconds and then die. It will not start again until it sets a few minutes. Then it will start and run five more seconds and die. I'm hoping someone can help me.
