I have a 1949 Chevrolet 3100 5 window pickup. It has an older restoration and is really in need of another one. I just picked it up in December. I'm having some trouble with getting it to run properly. After checking the engine code, I found out that it has a 1954 235 c.i. engine with a Y code, which stands for Powerglide. The truck has a four speed transmission.
The truck starts up and runs when I choke it, but after a short while it idles really rough until it finally dies out. It will not start without the choke pulled out. I checked the points and they were shot. I put new points, condenser, and plugs and it still does the same thing. I have not checked the timing on it yet. I don't know if it is timing, carburetor, or something internal.

This is a great question for the ENGINE FORUM. I would move this post to that forum but will let it stand here so other folks can see our new members as they register......and while we don't like for folks to "double post a question" in more than one forum I suggest you go to the engine forum and ask your question.
.....in the meantime, sounds like you have a fuel problem. Float level in carb? or other adjustment.

Welcome Darrell, They're nice when they run properly but can be a bear at times. Glad you started out here in the welcome centre, just follow the advice above and I'm sure you'll get help.

First thing I'd do is unhook the fuel line at the fuel pump that goes back to the tank. Put a piece if fuel line on the pump going into a gas can and see if it will start and run from the gas can. It could very well be that your fuel line coming from the tank is swollen almost shut and collapsed internally. Or the fuel tank could also be full of all manner of evil! | | |
