The flash from the welder hurts the eyes. I think the recommended lens is a #10 or #11. If you have the #10 you could scoot up to the next higher one. Every ones eyes have a different sensitivity to that frequency of light...yours must be more sensitive than most.
Too dark a shade and seeing the area to be welded becomes difficult. The shade number is usually etched in one corner of the filter. Take a look and get one shade darker. Make sure the pieces are gasketed and tight or light can get through and really ruin your day.

I have one of the Miller's auto darkening helmets. It's 3 years old and I use it for TIG work. The darkening adjustment goes from I think 9 to 12. My problem is when I'm doing thin work with low currents, like 1/8 alum. or sst, I can't see well as it's to dark on the lowest setting. Is there a way to "lighten" up the lens short of some sort of replacement? Right now I have an old mask that I have around the shop with a lighter lens in it for this work but as I don't do welding every day and I hate to bob my head when starting a weld. I'll move my hands while bobing my head and end up starting the weld off seam. Thanks
