For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2016 Posts: 253 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2016 Posts: 253 | So I finish fixing brake job and the part of my hub where it bolts onto axle housing the threads are stripped on outter end so lock nut won't tighten very good... previous owner obviously let wheel bearings go very bad on this side probably reason for the deal i got it for..... But my question is that a fixable thing like using a dye to rethread it and get slightly smaller lock nuts??? Or is this jus time for me to put new axle in??? And I have a question about that I found a eaton 2 speed rear same as one on my 85 ford f600 bucket truck on Craigslist was wondering if it was possible to make that work only problem I see is that axle has hydraulic brakes and my c50 doesn't have hydraulic brakes just juicers.....any helpful replys are greatly appreciated. It's clear from his previous post's he's not very knowledgeable on these truck's. Also using proper grammar and punctuation, would go a long way in understanding his post. But the rear has the hydraulic lines running to rear of drum and also regular brake juice lines. And yeah I'm no pro here but like to learn in's And out's of my rig so for future problems im more knowledgeable, plan to keep them awhile...but fyi my truck is stopping great now since I fixed leaking wheel cyls, and no more gear oil/wheel bearing grease leaking either so finally have all dry wheels. But since I'm a medium duty illiterate mechanic here anyone wanna explain how the brakes work for the Lucas girling brake system and if it's possible to bypass them? In my f600 it seems to me the Lucas rear brakes are only a parking brake but I'm not a 100% They could engage when driving not sure but this thought is what makes me think the Lucas brakes could possibly be by passed because my c50 has transmission park brake so I'd be good on that as long as I hook regular juice brakes up.... let me know if I'm crazy for this idea tho lol Thanks mike | | | | | Joined: May 2016 Posts: 253 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2016 Posts: 253 | And I'm not sure on gear ratio for axle I know it came off a 89 f800 jus figured it was close to same as my 85 f600 which is a 2 speed but can go 60mph so that's a plus but could be jus cuz it has the 9-20 tires and my c50 has 8.25-20 cuz from what I have learned here bigger tires get you going faster in big trucks. | | | | | Joined: May 2016 Posts: 253 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2016 Posts: 253 | Both ford axles are the (square housing) eaton electric two speed so I just assume they are close in gearing. I wouldnt think they would put a f800 out on road in 1989 that could only go 50mph pinned out like my c50 lol. But hell idk I guess if I had bigger tires on my axle I might hit 60 who knows but with the rear spindle threads being the way they are think I need to get it fixed/replaced soon. I got a load of fire wood the other day after putting it back together and it seemed fine nothing moved I made a mark all the way around brake drum on dust cover to see if drum/hub loosens and starts to come off and it has been in same spot since I put it back together so I feel alright but knowing the threads are sketchy it worries me. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 112 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 112 | Just Google the lucas girling brake system. Save a lot of typing.
And yes the park brake can apply itself while driving if you were to rupture a Hyd park brake line. You loose pressure and the spring inside takes over and set the brake.
