Well to day is one of those washouts, I've spent most of the day on the confuser a lot of that time was trying to find out about Dupont paints and I never did find any answers.
Does Dupont still make Lucite? Where does one find a Dupont retailer?

dupint page Many bodyshops mix their own paint these days, so body supply retailers are dryimg up like a grape in the hot sun. There is one near me, used to be a half dozen. brian

Thanks doc, where did you find that??? I've been lookin on and off for days and can't find any usfull information on their d%$# web sites. I guess that's another one of the reasons that everone I talk to now days is using PPG. Back in the day when I was in the automobile game Dupont was King, but then again so was DeSoto and Sinclair.

My local FLAPS, an Auto Supply affiliate, handles PPG & I have had great success(& I am really a novice @painting), they will mix anything, prices are very fair(if you buy alot thye give you body shop discount). No problems matching & mixing my 43 yr old codes. PPG's website is easier to use IMO also. PPG used to be Ditzler, IIRC, Brian

Why do you want lucite? Old technology that is better served in the thrash can.

Denny,
PPG owns the Lucite brand now. I believe they dropped the automotive finishes line and kept the house paint line.

Dave is correct. I went back and read the info on the Dupont site and they sold the automotive line in 1983 and the house paint line in 1993. Also there is a Lucite International but they are mostly into polymer plastics and resins. I haven't found any place that sells anything to do with Lucite lacquer. What are you trying to accomplish? Maybe we can find you another solution.

Denny, we have a DuPont store here ,I go there every day. Lacquer has been off the market for awhile now but I have seen some no name brands advertised. My jobber is a good friend ,in fact is building a 47 show truck. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks Papa Kent,
I was thinkin' that the original AD interior paint might have been Duco early on and then toward the end Lucite when GM switched over to it in the early 50's.
I've got a '50, 3604 and have tested the seat side garnish panels with lacquer thinner, and it won't touch it so I’m assuming now that it's enamel. I have a quart of PPG CPC ALK-200, (Commercial Performance Coatings, alkyd modified acrylic enamel that I got from JC that I was holding off on using cuz I thought the interiors were done in lacquer. The side panels are out of the sun and are probably the best preserved original color on the interior so Tuesday I dropped one of them off at the PPG dealer for them to mix me up another Qt. NG!!
They can only mix the Industrial coatings in gallons, and I sure don’t need a gallon right now. So I said Omni? and he said NG, for enamel I needed Delstar. I’m so confused!!!
My thoughts were originally to have them scan the panel, give me the formula and mix me up a quart, thsn later if I need more I could simply have them refer to the formula. NGGGGG!!! To scan it an give me a formula would add an extra $75 to the Quart. He explained that the scan was pretty rough and usually off by a bunch and they had to adjust the tint by hand. To come up with a formula they had to count or measure everything that was added to get the tint correct and record it all for the final formula.
So, I’m gonna get a one time mix of a quart to match the panel, in a Delstar Enamel. I wonder if that would mix OK with the CPC enamel??? Just in case I run short with one of them.
Next thing I got to figure out is if I can spray this plain or if I need (don't want) a hardener, what to use for reducer and clean up and what use for a flattener so I the glare doesn't blind me.

Denney, first find a new paint supplier. Every paint supplier in my town said that if I had a 2x2 chip of good paint they could color match it for the cost of a 2 ounce sample. I also purchased the correct paint for my 52 interor from Chevs of the 40s. As soon as I do a test panel, and get it color matched I will post the formula on this web site. I don't know why somebody hasn't done this before, so don't despaire you should have the code in the next couple of weeks. Jimmie.

Maybe I confused ya all again, they are gonna mix me a quart of paint, but they aren't gonna give me a formula unless I pay them $75 more. Sounds like that is the standard procedure
I'll be looking forward to what you find out Jimmie, are you using PPG and if so what system?

Denny,

That's not standard in my area. The PPG jobber gave me all formulas from color scans.

Have you called PPG for a formula (usually it is what they call an "offset" formula)?

Tim

Sounds like they are trying to get to you on the formula. The people I deal with will scan it and give me all the info I need for no charge.
