This references a thread I posted a short while back regarding water in oil. I am expecting my head back soon. It has been magnafluxed, inspected, etc. That wasn't the problem. Before setting the head back on the block, I would like to know if there is an "easy" way to check for a warped block surface. How flat is flat?

Years ago, I had a warped head that I diagnosed with a framing square. It was warped pretty bad, but i would think that the square might be a good place to start.

I use a carpenter's level and feeler gauges. It has a nice machined surface. If I have doubts about the surface of the level I just turn it around and measure again. If the level's surface was not true, the apparent warp would change.

Search Ebay for "machinist's straight edge". The prices are ranging from less than $20.00 to over a thousand, depending on how precise you want to be. It looks like some in the $40.00 range might be something I'd be interested in having, particularly the 3-sided one from Belarus.

My engineer brother has a machinist granite slab he puts a lot of confidence in. It'd sure be inconvenience to turn an engine upside down and check the block though! The head, it'd be great.

It would also probably be good for checking a straight edge or a framing square, for straightness.

Where did you find an engineer with any real hands-on experience? The ones I've encountered most of the time (including my brother) live in their own little fantasy world that has nothing whatsoever to do with actually working for a living!

Do a search for "machinist straight edge" and you will get lots of hits ranging from $50 to $500. Our Starrett was around $200 several years ago but we got one that could do straight eights. Always hang one vertically from one end when not in use.

He's a hands on guy. Specs and installs a lot of automated robotic type equipment, writes a lot of the operating code as well. Often times he's the guy with the greasy coveralls on new installations though.

It's funny he's little bro, middle bro and I are very seldom allowed to do MUCH at all so-far as helping on his personal around the place projects. Our standard of "good enough" usually isn't!
