I need a 4 speed transmission for my 1956 1.5 ton 4100 truck with the 235 six engine. Does anyone know the compatibility years for this transmission? I have access to a 1948 2 ton Chevy truck transmission and wondered if it would bolt up to my 56 truck?

if they are both SM420 transmissions, it should bolt up. I am not sure if the 48 had an open drive shaft or not. You may need to change the rear bearing retainer plate that also holds the park brake.

Per my Parts Books, Transmission Case casting number 591953 was used from 1948 thru 1963.

Note, you may have to transfer your parking brake if it's different or not there.
