My question if should I take the frame apart, ie.. removing the rivets and taking off the crossmembers and what not? What should I use to put the frame back to gether again? Would it be alright to weld or use bolts, or should I use only rivits? Is there any danger of the rust in the area under the joints spreading if I do not get it all out? Should I also use body filler to fill the divits left by the rust or just prime and paint. I may be nit picking but I would like to do the best possible.
Kenny B. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2000 Posts: 112 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2000 Posts: 112 | kenny I would not take the frame apart if it is in good condition IE no loose rivits or bad cross members rails so forth. Remove all nuts and bolts, sand blast and paint. that frame was made in a factory with tons of pressure putting those rivits into the frame cross members on a jig. If you take it all apart you gotta rivit all that stuff back together. that means from front to rear of the frame it has to be square and true. If you want a perfect frame. primer, filler, and primer and then top coat. lotta sanding inbetween primer and filer and primer.

Just like jbennet, I owouldn't reove anything off the frame either, just no good reason to go thru that much work, & those ribbets are pretty tough. No one will notice any rust pits once the truck is together, unless you are going for an all out show truck. Primer & paint. Thanks. 64 I as you can see am from Marion I love AR but this side is to dang flat for my personal taste. I love the state once you get past Crowley's Ridge. I lived in Central MS before here.

You can hit the rusty spots w/phosphoric acid or any concoction(Rust-Mort etc) you can find. If it is good paint it will not provide oxygen for rust to start again-GM never painted any frames, so any paint will be a huge improvement over stock.. Brian | | |
