On the 59 235 im putting in my truck, I'm trying to figure out how to use the old bracket from the generator cause the kit on eBay is like $60. Is there a particular trick to doing this? I'd leave the generator except I'm already wired for an alternator and I don't know if the generator works or not. Anyway can I use my old bracket? Will the belt line up?
Hy Ian Ring, it has been far too long since I did my first alternator conversion, but if my memory is correct the generator lower bracket will not allow the alternator to be positioned so that the belt pulleys will line up. You may be able to drill different holes in the bracket that will allow the alternator to be positioned correctly, good luck with the project.
Hi Ian. Assuming that you are installing a Delco 10SI alternator, you can install it with the original generator bracket. You will need to insert a spacer on the front of the bracket to bring the alternator pulley out far enough to line up with the pulleys on the water pump and the harmonic balancer. As I recall, it takes about a 1/2" spacer. Your stock adjusting arm will have an offset. You need to reverse the direction of the offset to get it to line up with the locking bolt on the alternator.
Not as spiffy as a new bracket specifically made for the alternator, but works fine.
As I can best remember, that bracket was on the generator originally. I may have had to reshape it a little,- its been about ten years since I changed to 12 volts and Alternator.
