| | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 1,438 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 1,438 | OK, don't have a horn but I can hear the horn circuit activate when I turn the wheel. Not all the time though. I pulled the horn relay and it stopped doing that. Maybe I was hearing the relay or maybe arching in the steering column. I put a voltmeter from the horn wire coming out of the column to ground and picked up voltage as I heard the noise. Didn't think about isolating relay 'till just now. This is a new problem after maybe 200 miles on a new rebuild and Painless wiring harness. I'm thinking of pulling the steering wheel first to see what I can see. Any suggestions on what to look for?

| | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,270 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,270 | Take the screw which holds the horn wire secure to the steering mast under the dash. This is where they often make contact to ground making the horn blow.
You can often solve the problem by sliding a short length of heat shrink over the cracked/exposed section of wire.

I thought that I hit the horn button when I pulled out of the driveway, horn blew when I went around the next corner and I was sure I never hit the horn button. I continued on tour after unplugging the horn relay on the firewall. I got home, took off the steering wheel and found the Horn Contact Spring/Pin sleeve was broken at the bottom, letting the copper pin contact the horn plate at will and completing the circuit for the horn to blow!!! I bought a new horn contact spring pin and sleeve assembly from Classic Muscle out of Winston Salem. I had to make the sleeve fit the hole in the steering wheel, (sleeve was too large dia by .030"). It was plastic so it was easy to change to fit. After re-assembly this worked great, horn blows on demand now!!! | | |
