Once the repair panel is welded and ground down what is recommended to use a a smoothing filler?

Roger - the plastic fillers are the answer nowadays - check yer local store that sells body shop supplies and see what brand's prefered by the body shops in yer area - the smoother you get the repair, the finer the grade of filler you can use, and the better the result will be

We put a layer of fibreglass first over anything that gets welded. Thing is ya don't know if you missed a pinhole or two. The fibreglass will keep any water from getting through and causing bubbles.

when you say 'layer of fiberglass' what do you mean?

a single layer of resin saturated cloth? multiple layers? just resin? on backside?

how far from the weld does it extend?

if you use fiberglas cloth and resin on steel, be aware that there is a particular type of fiberglas resin designed for applications to steel .... OTOH "bondo" type fillers, including the ones with strands [fine or coarse] are actually polyester resins, like "fiberglas", but designed for metalwork

delux54panel, to start with I don't mis-represent My truck to no one...I did what was
necessary to get it where You see it...I did remove
plastic filler as much as 2 inches thick from different area's of the body...On the left front
fender over the headlight some bondo sculpturer
laid a millers beer can down, then covered it with
2 inches of bondo. The truck at sometime in its life
was driven through a barbed wire fence, as there was
3 deep gouges from the nose of the hood all the way to the rear of the hood...with a dolly block and
a pick hammer, the gouges were lifted, and filed out...If someone had stayed away from the truck with their barrel of bondo, I would have finished much sooner...and YES 15,844 miles....Bill B???

same idea as this stuff.

Just mix it up, put it on, really force it in though. and then sand off just like you would any other filler.
Chances are a coat of finishing putty would have to be put on top of that aswell.

Bill_B That is a really nice truck. I hope mine comes out that good (but I doubt it) As far as filler I use Duraglss then regular filler over that. My tuck has so many welded in patches that it's more patches than original but it is just for me and the crew that works on the 42.

dad, yer truck is lookin absolutely great, and I particularly like that 2-tone green! it's similar to what I have going for the project panel I hope to finish someday
