Inlinersis a good place to start, check out the casting #'s section. I'm sure someone with the stack of parts numbers books will be along shortly. -W | | | | Joined: Oct 2017 Posts: 4 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Oct 2017 Posts: 4 | It is a chevy- I tried doing a search but I cannot find anything similar to those numbers | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 506 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 506 | Does it have 1 or 2 valve covers?
Your casting # 3731548 is probably a V-8... 1957 283 engine.

The stamp code on the front passenger bank will tell you the original application if it hasn't been removed during a rebuild. The only other way to tell would be the bore diameter; 3.75" for the 265 and 3.875" for the 283.

But it is out of a 1956 chevy 3100 pickup. The block stamping does not make sense though. F 4(capital i) 8F that is all that is there. I guess I am trying to figure out if there is any value to the engine and muncie SM 420 transmission which has a code 2GM 591953 A1156 | | | | Joined: Dec 2014 Posts: 13 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Dec 2014 Posts: 13 | The stamp code from the motor say it was assembled at Flint (F) April (4) 18th (I8) for a 283 V8 with Powerglide for a passenger car (F). The '57 265/283 is an upgrade from the '55-'56s as it doesn't have the weird notched distributor to allow oiling of the top end. Someone probably pulled it to replace either an Inline 6 or bad V8. Someone restoring a '57 passenger car may want the motor. All 4 bbl carb and automatic V8 cars got 283s in '57 and 2bbl stick cars kept using 265s as did all 3000 and 4000 series trucks. I'd take the 4 speed if I was closer.
