When the engine starts fuel gauge reads empty. After a few minutes it max's out at 1/4 tank even though tank is full. What do you guys think?

Bad connections that are causing a voltage loss?

Whats interesting is that it takes a few minutes for this to happen. I agree with checking all of the connections for corrosion and verify the ground wire on the sending unit is well grounded but I'm wondering about the guage itself. Somewhere on this site was a guage troubleshooting guide and I'm also wondering that if we knew what the resistance was supposed to be , if you could check the resistance on the sending unit to see if its correct for what it should be with a full tank ? There's another post on this same forum, might check it out to see if that provides some help. I'm anxious to see other folks recommendations.

Remove the ground wire from the sending unit to see if the gauge goes past full with the key on.
If it doesn't, this might indicate that the back of your gauge isn't grounded properly. This is common when one gets carried away with painting parts.
If it does go to past full with the key on, then your problem is likely a bad sending unit. Take it out and wire it up correctly so that you can manually move the float up and down while watching the gauge.
