From the bits and pieces I've read, there's difference between the king pins in Chevy 1/2 tons compared to bigger trucks. Something about 1/2 tons having floating bushings and this does not require reaming. Unless the bearing is missing and the spindle or axle have been wallowed out, which then it would need to be resized by reaming for oversized kingpin sets.
Can anyone help clarify this?

They can be inserted with finger pressure. It is my understanding that oversize kingpins were made available to deal with the problem of a wallowed out hole in the axle. I don't think the OD of the oversize bushings changed. I don't believe there is an off the shelf cure for wallowed out holes in the spindle assembly. Due to poor lubrication/greasing, the spindles get easily abused/wallowed-out (Chevrolet & GMC light trucks).
One minor addition: people have posted part numbers for larger outer-diameter bushings to allow "wallowed-out holes" in the spindles. This would require machining/drilling the holes in the spindles to fit the outer diameter of those bushings.
This is not a GM-part-number "fix". But, GM and other-brand replacements are not being made, even though the spindles were used for several years on a lot of trucks. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2015 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2015 Posts: 7 | OK, thanks everybody. So I'm hoping for the play to be between bushing and king pin, not between the bushing and spindle and not between the king pin and axle. I read where someone was putting the truck on jack stands and using a pin smaller than the king pin and pressing that up on the kingpin with a jack enough to lift axle off jack stands about 1/4 inch. So he was using the trucks weight to remove king pin, makes sense to me. Anybody know of a more effective way? | | |
