Hello,
the end clearance at the intermediate bearing is at the crankshaft of my engine about .o16 inch. Is this too much to keep the engine working?

Do you mean the crank play fore and aft?

Normal end play is .006" maximum. Are you working with new or used main bearings? A new bearing might get you closer to specification if the thrust face of the crankshaft isn't worn badly. Sometimes a wrong clutch adjustment will cause a constant pressure on the flywheel and crankshaft which wears out the thrust bearing and the crankshaft flange. Too much end play will sometimes cause an intermittent knock that's hard to find.

What is the procedure for measuring crankshaft end play on an installed 235?

Pull the pan, rock crank back and forth while measuring.

A pretty close estimate can be done without pulling the pan. Mount a dial indicator on the lower part of the bellhousing with the stem on the flywheel, and pry the harmonic balancer forward and the flywheel back. The movement of the dial needle will be the end play of the thrust faces.

Thanks Jerry.
Thanks Ed, but what did I do to you lately for you to want to make me get all covered up with oil? smile (Its a safe bet I do deserve it for something or another.)
