Is this too much to keep the engine working? Are you working with new or used main bearings? A new bearing might get you closer to specification if the thrust face of the crankshaft isn't worn badly. Sometimes a wrong clutch adjustment will cause a constant pressure on the flywheel and crankshaft which wears out the thrust bearing and the crankshaft flange. Too much end play will sometimes cause an intermittent knock that's hard to find. Jerry

Mount a dial indicator on the lower part of the bellhousing with the stem on the flywheel, and pry the harmonic balancer forward and the flywheel back. The movement of the dial needle will be the end play of the thrust faces. Jerry
