I have inherited a 6 cyl chevy engine want to know the year etc. I think it is a 235. The number stamped in block behind the Dist. is FI1090R.It has a screw on oil filter at the front on the dist side.So it is newer than the '54 I have.
Thanks for the help

Post the block/head casting codes and date codes.
That will confirm date.

No 235 had a screw-on oil filter (from the factory/dealer).
No 235 normally had a GM factory/dealer oil filter on the distributor side.

Can you post a photo of the oil filter?
Can you post a photo of that "Engine Serial Number"?

The letter "R" is a big truck.

Decode your serial #

The block casting # will help identify the engine size,
and the block casting date code will confirm the year.

Maybe you got lucky and inherited a 261.
