Removed a trans.from a 56 3200(3 speed on colum) Installed a 3speed colum trans from a 55 wagon. Both trans. had same mumbers on outside (all numbers). The linkage from the truck will not hook up to the shifter shaft. The chevy truck manual showes2nd /3rdshifter shaft in the up position first/reverse in the down position.Mine are both in the down position. Can I remove the side cover and turn the shaft 180 degrees?

Hy Midpiner, you should be able to augment the shifter arms on the car transmission to match the truck transmission, no need to open the transmission. You might have to swap levers from the truck transmission over to the car transmission, hope that helps.

You cannot turn the shafts, The side cover is the only main difference between the car and truck trans in those years. They are clocked completely different. You can however use the side cover from the truck on the car transmission. There are two types of side covers, the scissor type and the ball type. Either one will work but the shift forks do not interchange with each other. Take a close look at the wear on the 2-3 shift fork. If it shows a considerable amount of wear it should be replaced.

The numbers you looked at is a casting number. Different applications were built in the same casting. This is why salvage yards used the Hollander interchange book.
