For bumper guard mounting, are you supposed to use the same holes that the bumper mounts to the frame, or do you have to drill new holes into your bumper for the guards?

The truck I have, the PO made new holes in the bumper for the guards. I'm replacing it due to a major dent so now I know.

I have installed factory bumper guards on a few '64-'66 Chevy trucks. I recently bought a painted factory pair on eBay, which included a printed instruction sheet entitled Front Bumper Guard Instruction Sheet Series 10 - 20 - 30 - 40, printed by CHEVROLET DIVISION General Motors Corporation. The instructions indicate drilling two new 5/8" diameter holes approximately three inches to the outside of the existing carriage head bumper bolts. There is a template provided indicating the same.

It seems drilling new holes is excessive when you can install the front bumper guards utilizing the existing front bumper bolt holes at the frame rails. I learned from this literature that drilling new holes is also an acceptable method per the factory literature.

Wow, Tony-I have a NOS pair of 64-66 painted front guards I put on old black truck. The original instruction sheet shows using the OE bumper holes. Even says to discard the OE bumper bolts. Guess GM(or their supplier) must have changed their mind somewhere along the line. When I was at the Ford dealer one guy would put bumper guards way out near the edge of the bumper. The OE instructions show them being mounted near the center, but they would fit anywhere. Brian

Well… I did notice that on my truck (GMC) if I put the guards in the stock bumper mounting holes that it will probably cover up the GMC emblem in my grill, The G and the M.

I will try the stock location and if it doesn't look good I will resort to the other option.

Here is old black truck w/the bumper guards, front end they would be close to blocking the GMC letters-I wonder if Chevrolet used the bumper mounting holes & GMC spaced theirs out wider w/new holes as Tony writes. Brian

I like the front bumper guards mounted with the bumper bolts from an aesthetics standpoint, as well as having the front bumper guards directly in line with the frame rails for impact. That being said, maybe it is prudent to have the front bumper guards outside of the frame rails, in order to absorb a bit of the energy, in the event of low impact contact with an obstruction.

Also, if the front bumper guards cover the G and the C on the GMC trucks, it is better to move them out from the factory bumper bolt locations, to avoid covering the letters.

It seems there are upsides to both methods of installing the front bumper guards and it is up to each owner's personal taste, whereas they were done both ways.
