ok so i definitely want to prep and prime my truck myself. from there, my dads good friend wh has restored many many cars says as long as i cut in, his buddy nearby can hook me up with the final coat of paint. the bed is off the truck and ive painted the frame from the cab back, and im currently sanding down all of the panels for the bed (bedsides, tubs, front, tailgate, etc). so the next step would be the front half of the truck, but the problem is that im worried if i start sanding, it will all start rusting because its just sitting on the street and i dotn have a garage. now i could try to find a friend somewhat nearby to let me use his garage, but im trying to figure out a way to keep from doing that. ive thought about maybe getting a large, thick plastic drop cloth to cover the truck everyday when im done sanding, but then if moisture got up under there id be afraid of rust starting. and just to clarify, im not looking to sand the whole thing down to metal, however in some parts im sure it will get there like edges and stuff, just looking to get through at least the clear coat. so any ideas i would really appreciate. thanks.

Even just covering with a car cover you will have problems- when it rains the water will go underneath, then evaporate and get trapped under the cover. Either find a garage or get one of the portable buildings.

Eastwood sells a product called metal prep that keeps bare metal from rusting for ~ 14 days. It comes as a powder that you mix with water and then wash down your part. I've never had a problem with rust after using it.

ok well as far as the portable building goes thats out of the question. the 2x4 with plastic sounds alright. and also, im not trying to make this a showroom paintjob, just something thats going to look alright. i can probably get a garage to work in but i think it would be kind of a pain to drive somewhere to work on it, but i mean i guess that just a trade off. anyway, thanks for the advice.

I would pick a few DRY days when I could work on the truck and go at it to get it done as quick as possible. Cover using the 2x4 framework and keep that plastic off the surface of the truck because of water vapor.Wipe areas sanded with prep as you go and as I said get it done as soon as possible and move it inside to a warm dry place.Just my 2 cents worth!!

robin58,

I'd also like to get a copy of that article. Like Rusty Rod, I'd like to put it up inside my garage to keep it relatively clean.

December 2006 Auto Restorer has the paint booth built with PVC pipe & plastic sheeting. It also shows how to put in an exhaust fan & filters in it.

Sorry, guys, but since that is a recently copyrighted article I'm going to have to take the link down. I can't stop you from emailing it to each other but please support our hobby magazines and the author by purchasing a legal copy.
Thanks,
