I'm thinking I should not feel any but not real sure. I'm not talking about the play when twisting the driveline where there is some movement with the gears.

Dennis Well, there's your trouble right there.  Seriously, how many miles on those u-joints? Premature u-joint wear can come from a mismatch between pinion angle and engine angle. Carl

They need to be the same or within +/- 1.5 degrees of each other. There are angled shims available to adjust the pinion angle to match the engine angle. It sounds like you need new u-joints. Don't get cheap and only replace just one (this urge haunts me constantly ).
