i have a 1950 chevy 1 ton, 6v, SRW with a dump box. the motor is a 261, it has the original transmission and i've got the 5.14 gears in the rear. i would like to put a T5 transmission in it, but i will lose the PTO output. i was wondering if someone could recommend something like a 6v motor to drive the PTO or a different trans or just a different setup in order to not lose the PTO.

thank in advance

If you get a GM 14 bolt rear, you can keep your dump system as is; or you could make the PTO pump, engine driven via belt, a lot of work.

Mount a power steering pump on the engine, and use a hydraulic motor to drive the PTO pump. Be aware it's going to be pretty slow. Also, the T5 will be way too light duty for the application you're considering.

Hi guys thank for the reply
Do you think the GM 14 bolt comes in 3.73 and do you think the engine is powerful enough to drive it or is there a better ratio to use. i don't really want to use 4.10 gears (just doesn't seem like it's enough gain for the expense).
See I never thought of using a power steering pump to power the hydraulics, that's an awesome idea.

4.10's are a significant difference from the 5.14's. I think you would find a good medium there between acceptable highway speeds and available power. Gotta remember that there were no such thing as an interstate in '50!

Jerry, just curious, why would the T-5 be too light duty for a 148 HP engine? The 4.3 puts out a whopping 180!

You might also consider use and number of nearby mountains when considering 4.10 or 3.73(which 14 bolt's have) , number of nearby freeways.

Try gettinng the truck loaded up with dirt or gravel, and then hit a section of washboard road on a hard pull- - - - -the inertia of several times the weight of the vehicle the T-5 was intended to work with will take teeth off the gears like shellng an ear of dried corn. The gears in the SM-420 weren't over-engineered for no reason at all.

Before getting too crazy with transmission swaps, etc, you might want to read our

Techtip on swapping out your rear axle's third member for one with a 4.10 ratio

Heck of a lot simpler than what's been discussed so far.... wink And the 4.10 is a heck of a nice improvement over the original ratio. I've done it in my AD 1-ton and was quite pleased. One of our users (mrf1002u) was honchoing a swap deal with the rock crawlers -- they wanted our original 5.x ratio third members and were swapping us their 4.10's AND covering the shipping. All we had to pay for were the new gaskets and oil to refill the axle.

Just my uninformed personal opinion, but I think your truck would be pretty gutless with the 3.x gearing.

I Second Johns suggestion!
I also made the 4:10 swap, with the help of the ODSS! The ratio works great. I had two yards of top soil in the truck and it handled it with no problem. I'm totally stock with a 92hp, 216. It was actually the first time I used first gear for a normal drive. Your choice, but I would try the easy route first.
Good luck,
Jim

yes, the 4.10 ratio is great for an original 1 ton, I have that in my 51 GMC with original 228.

Though I haven't tried it my opinion is the 3.73 ratio might be OK in flat country and or if you don't haul anything much.
Otherwise the 4.10 is pretty good all around, no to fast, not to slow, and considering the low engine HP and only just adequate brakes staying a little slow is a good thing.

I guess I need to rethink the whole thing. I would love to do a center section swap but trying to find one has been a bit tough. I looked around locally but nothing yet, I guess i'll just keep looking.
