'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

The starter motor should spin without turning the engine. It's possible you've got bent or damaged linkage that's not moving far enough to push the button as the gear engages the flywheel. Ditto on bench testing the starter before it's installed. You could also try gluing a flat washer onto the switch button with RTV sealer or trim cement as a quick test of the linkage to see if that makes the motor turn as the stomp pedal is pushed.

More length of travel pushes linkage a bit further making the connection. It wasn't. If you have one of those 12 volt cables. It's not big enough. I bought a 2/0 gauge and connected it to the bolt on the top of the starter mount. HUGE difference. The cable was about $50 but I'm glad to have it.
