Having discussed, recently, the installing of door locks, on a 51, that use the turn down style exterior handles, I have a question.
Intent is to have a door lock on both doors. Drivers side, I have fabricated the new latch to work with the new door lock. Passenger side latch comes ready to accept the lock, although I have not installed the lock yet.
Question I have is this: Holding the new door lock in my hand, key facing vertical (think 12 o'clock position), it will turn left to 9 o'clock, stops there, but the key WILL NOT come out. If you turn the key the other way to 3 o'clock, it stops there, and the key WILL NOT come out. Go back to 12 o'clock, and you can remove the key. Shaft turns in tandem with the lock cylinder. Logic tells me this ain't working correctly. This make any sense?

What you described above. is exactly how my OE lock works, also. I would add though that rotating the key to 9:00 locks the door; rotating the key to 3:00 unlocks the door. The cylinder/key is always at 12:00 to insert or remove the key. Good luck. Dave | | | | Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 223 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 223 | Cool deal, thank you sir.
You have the lock on your driver's side also?

Thanks in advance. | | | | Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 223 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 223 | Bruce W,

Another question.....you checked just the passenger side on your vehicle?
Reason I ask this, the factory designed latch, on the passenger side, will/does operate different than what I've come up with for making the driver's side latch work with a lock. The locking/unlocking is determined at the latch. The door lock shaft only turns. I'm still gonna make it work.

any chance you can send me some of those pics as well? tired of having to lock on one side only..... Darn shame the pictures and info were not shared HERE rather than via PM's. Is there a write up anywhere on adding the door lock to the driver's door? I have a 1950 Chevy COE I would like to do this mod to. I'm sure I could figure it out by looking at the passenger door latch assembly. Maybe he'll see this and respond in here. If not, why not PM him and ask him to post that info to share. This is neat in that this is a very old thread.

Here is an even older thread with a link to some pictures: https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthread...-drivers-side-door-lock.html#Post1072278I noticed in this version of the mod Evan has the lock arm pivot in a different place than the passenger side, so the key slot location is not symmetrical. The passenger latch mechanism has the lock arm sandwiched between 2 components. The driver side would have your add-on part above that area, but it could be lined up with the same key location. | | | | Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 5,139 Authorized Pest | Authorized Pest Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 5,139 | I sent Mike a PM asking him to chime in ....
