I'm trying to get some input on a body part here. The piece of metal that you see from the rear of the truck below the bed and in front of rear bumper (if you have a bumper, which I don't) is dented, cut up and just beat on my truck. Jim Carters seems to have some parts called roll pans but they do not look like OEM. Has anyone ever replaced one of these? Do you cut the old one out and weld the new one in? I'd attach a picture to describe what I'm talking about but I'm just not that savvy.

A roll pan is more of a custom thing. The idea is to cover the ends of the frame rails, especially if the rear bumper is eliminated. Some customs do the same treatment on the front, too.
The part you are really needing is the rear cross sill. Roll pans actually attach to the bottom of the cross sill, not cover it.If you want to replace it with original, contact Mar-K. They have reproductions.

The beat up part you are referring to is called the rear cross sill. I spent lots of hours smoothing mine and then when I held the roll pan up to it all my work would be covered over so I blew that off. The roll pan is welded on to the sill behind the tailgate hinge and completly hides the original pc. If you're intending on a roll pan don't spend too much time on the sill as it will be hidden. If your's is really mangled a repop pc. is probably cheaper than the time spent repairing it.

Thanks all for the input. I guess what I'm looking for is a new cross sill rather than a roll pan. So the next question is-how do you get the old one out and the new one in? It appears to be welded to the stake pockets. It also appears to be 2 layers, so I.B., how did you bang dents out when you have to work around the inner piece?

Mine wasn't welded to the stake pockets so it just slipped off but I've heard some were welded on. I would find and drill out the spotwelds to separate it. You could slide a block of hardwood to fill the space when you beat on it but at $90.00 for a new one I would just throw it in the bush.

Thanks again, all. I agree with the replacement. I don't have the patience or skill to straighten out what's under there.
