I'm looking to change out the water pump on my 235 . I know the engine is not the original so it's kind of throwing me for a loop.
The fan pulley is bent so I figured I'd change it all out. I bought a replacement pump for a 1951 but it seems as if it's missing the top mounting hole and that's where my 12v alternator bracket is mounted.
Any help is appreciated

I have pictures but need
To figure out how to load them from my phone

The only 235 that works with a 1951 pump (which is for a 216) would be a 1954 or early 55. 55 2nd. and later engines use a low-mounted pump that sticks back into a hole in the block and puts the fan too low to cool well. There is an adapter plate to mount an early pump on a late block, but it requires drilling and tapping two holes in the late model block.

Jerry is referring to the high-pressure 235 engine, probably because of the reference to an odd mounting hole?

If the 235 in question is a 1941-1953 low pressure 235, the water pump would be in the correct location for 1955st and earlier trucks.

704josh, do you know the year of your 235?
What is the engine serial number pressed into the block to the rear of the distributor?

I have a number in front of the distributor 3837004
Is there an easy way to post a picture on here?

We don't allow posting of pictures on this forum. You may post a link to a picture using any of the myriad image posting sites on the web; Photobucket, Google Images, etc.

The reason we don't allow pictures is because we are an international website. Some of our members have modem connections that would make loading pictures next to impossible.

Is there no engine serial number pressed/stamped into the block in the flat boss/ledge to the rear of the distributor?

That number/code you have posted twice is a block casting number/code that was used in a few different years.

The engine serial number, if it is the original number/code, will help to further ID the engine and its original "application".

3837004 is a 235 from 1955-57 according to one list I have. This block uses the later type water pump, not at all like the 53 and earlier pumps.

JiMerit's info is correct regarding the later style water pump (lower mount) being used on the 3837004 block.

For future readers, that casting code was used from 55-57 on 235 car blocks/engines.

As Jerry pointed-out above, 1955 Advance-Design trucks had the higher water pump. And they had the block casting code 3733745, and late 1955 Task Force trucks supposedly had a 3836233 block casting code with lower mount water pump (but the 3837004 block might also have been used on late 1955 trucks).

It would be interesting check the engine serial number to see if 704Josh's block was a car or truck block.

I bought the Napa replacement pump # 58-125. Looking at it flat on the table the boss for the 1 o clock bolt hole is there but not drilled
I'm thinking of trying to install and see what that looks like or if not drill the boss out to be able to use that mounting hole
Ideas?

That water pump is for a 1954/55st and earlier 216/235.

Application List

I think it was established above, that you have a late-1955 (1955-2nd series) to 1957 235?
That engine uses a different style water pump (unless you plan to use a water-pump relocation plate/adapter) with that earlier water pump.

Here's another pic of the 235 block you have, the large hole with four bolt holes houses the next generation water pump which (entire pump below the block deck) is only a problem when used in 54 and earlier Chev cars and trucks. The fix as others have described, is an adapter plate that bolts over this large hole AND allows the mounting of the older version water pump, which mounts higher on the block. and in front of the head.
Borrowed the pic from Deve's archives, thanks Deve.

Ok so with the "adapter plate" could you give a part number and brand for the replacement waterpump?
Sorry for all the questions
If there was a way to just replace the pulley I think that would fix my problem also but that's probably another can of worms

tclederman's photo looks like the one you want. As to the can of worms, for sure. cut down fan using your original water pump will not provide the air flow you need plus will hit the lower radiator hose/outlet and possibly the harmonic balancer. The plate will also move the water pump higher up putting the fan in it's original location. Lots of us have been down this road before, changing pulleys etc, wish I had access to the adaptor plate years ago.

The water pump you have will work on the adapter plate.

Does it have a pulley groove-width that matches your harmonic balancer groove-width and your generator pulley groove width-

The 216/early 235 water pump has a pulley that's pressed onto the shaft, and is not replaceable without some serious pulling and pressing. There are two different belt widths, depending on the year of the engine it's intended for and the width of the crankshaft and generator/alternator pulley grooves. The later model pump that fits the 55-up 235 has a small round hub and a bolted-on pulley.

It is possible to machine away the pulley grooves on the early pump and adapt a pulley for a MOPAR V8 for applications that use a 2-groove crankshaft pulley. This makes it much simpler to mount accessories like A/C compressors and power steering pumps.
