For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 71 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 71 | I have a 67 c10. It has the trans w/o 1st gear synchro. I've picked up a fully synchronized 3 speed to replace it. Should this be a straight bolt on job or will other parts need to be switched out also / reworked. I ask because I noticed the shift levers shafts on my old trans seem closer together then on the one I picked up to replace them and it. Made me start thinking about drive shaft etc. Thanks | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 | 1967 was a transition year. 6 cyl trucks had the short tail housing Muncie with the non syncro first gear. If you have this transmission the driveshaft will need to be modified to accept the longer Saganaw transmission. It may also require a fine spline front yoke. Some of the later units had a larger front bearing retainer so it may be too large for the hole in the bellhousing. The side cover is different as you indicated and will require some modification to the shift rods & arms. Otherwise it will "bolt right in". Fred

The bell housing and front yoke shouldn't hard to find I imagine. The shift linkages will I need to source new or is it probably just that my old ones will just need adjusting? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 71 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 71 | Also what other than synchro on 1st might I gain from this switch. I wanted synchro on 1st to make driving in city traffic easier. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 Crusing in the Passing Lane | | Crusing in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 | Learning to double clutch will be a lot less work and $ than changing out trans.

I know it weighs considerably more! The same basic gearbox was used as a 4 speed with the reverse section moved into the tailshaft housing to create the Saginaw 4 speed used in mid-1970's cars like the Vega, etc. Jerry

Drivers today don't seem too understand that older vehicles like this don't handle or brake as well as what they drive. Plus I'd like to find a vintage camper to pull with it and had also heard the one with synchro in all 3 years was tougher. I've already bought the trans but may not get in a hurry to install it. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 | A good number of members here have installed the Saganaw trans and praise it highly. You could very well have the correct bell housing and the shift arm issues can be worked out. You may also wish to upgrade the brakes, steering, engine, and cooling system as part of the process. An overdrive is another option, of course it's easy to spend money for someone else. Fred
